Fans attending this years’ Comic-Con in San Diego were treated to the first glimpse of Venom. During the much-anticipated Sony Pictures’ presentation which included a panel consisting of director Sam Raimi, producer Laura Ziskin and stars Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Thomas Haden Church, Bryce Dallas Howard and Topher Grace, exclusive footage was shown that included CG animatics in place for final special effects sequences. The “trailer” begins with Peter Parker looking at himself in the mirror as he slowly pulls away his clothing to reveal the black Spidey suit underneath. Topher Grace’s Eddie Brock, a.k.a. Venom enters a church, crosses himself with holy water and kneels before God. ”It’s Brock, sir. Edward Brock Jr. I’m here, humbled and humiliated to ask you for one thing…I want you to kill Peter Parker.”

“All will be lost” appears over black as quick shots of Spider-Man, Sandman, Mary Jane, Harry Osborn bombard the screen. Spider-Man thrown across the room by Sandman. Sandman’s facing exploding into sand as Spider-Man slams his fist into him. Peter tearing the black suit from his body. And finally a deafening scream as the number “3″ over the black spidey suit feels the screen…then black.

Just when you think the “trailer” is over though, a bell sounds and the first glimpse of Venom appears as he leaps toward the screen…Goosebumps!

When asked about the character of Venom and his initial reluctance to include him as a villain in the third installment, director Sam Raimi declared, “Now that I’ve seen Topher Grace perform him, and saw what Alvin Sargent did with the script - he created a great character, really filled out Eddie Brock into a very meaningful character. And Tobey has a great energy with him in the few scenes they play together as competitors and I really like him now.”

During the panel, Topher Grace acknowledged his love of the McFarlane era Venom. When asked about which version his Venom would be based on, Raimi responded, “We studied all the different looks. So many different artists…created different looks of Venom and we tried to take the ones that worked best for us, but also the ones (Marvel) felt were the most classic elements and base it on that.”
