Academy Award nominated actor Thomas Haden Church has been tapped as Spider-Man’s newest archenemy in the upcoming Spider-Man 3. Director Sam Raimi made the announcement on Monday with producer Laura Ziskin and Marvel Studio’s Avi Arad. They did not announce which villain Church will be playing, causing much speculation. The film is scheduled for a May 4, 2007 release and will star Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Kirsten Dunst as love interest Mary-Jane Watson. Thomas Haden Church was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in the sleeper hit Sideways. Production is scheduled to begin early next year.
Academy Award winning visual effects designer John Dykstra has passed on Spider-Man 3 in order to handle visual effects duties for director McG’s Hot Wheels. ”I will miss all of the terrific people I worked with on Spider-Man,” announced Dykstra. ”But this is a great opportunity. I’m an adrenaline junkie; it’s an avocation. And what’s cool about Hot Wheels is it allows us to explore the language of cars %u2013 from Formula One, to tuners, hot rods, classics, dinosaur cars, monster trucks and so on.” Dykstra worked on the first two Spider-Man films and won an Academy Award for the visual effects on Spider-Man 2. Fellow Academy Award winner Scott Stokdyk who worked as visual effects supervisor on Spider-Man 2, will take over for Dykstra on Spider-Man 3.
