Hasbro will release a number of Spider-Man 3 toys this weekend in what they have dubbed “Webslinger Weekend.” Similar to the launch of Star Wars toys prior to the relase of those films, Hasbro is attempting to make the release of Spider-Man toys an event to help build excitement for the toys and the upcoming film.
The toys will include Spider-Spud, a Mr. Potato Head figure that will transform into Peter Parker or Spider-Man, WebBlaster that will shoot water or special “webbing” and a Spi-Dog that will allow users to hook up to an MP3 player to play music with accompanying movement and lights. Some retailers, including Target, Wal-Mart and Toys-R-Us will be selling exclusive figures from the film.

As for the question on everyone’s mind - what does the future hold for Spider-Man? ”Well, I think Sam [Raimi] has dedicated so much of his life, like more than ten years, to the Spider-Man franchise with so much passion and love, the man is burnt out at this time,” Dunst told reporters. ”I think he needs a long vacation to put his creativity towards something else and then maybe we’ll revisit it. I told Sam that we should do a Spider-Man 4 that’s completely low budget - Evil Dead style - where Mary Jane has eight children with very little special effects and then we’ll get a whole new audience. We’d make a lot of money, because it wouldn’t cost as much and everyone would go see it.” And what of the rumor Sony Pictures may move forward on another Spider-Man film without director Sam Raimi at the helm? ”Do they want to give Sam Raimi a heart attack? That’s evil. Sorry, that’s not happening any time soon. I would just say no for Sam’s sake so that he can have a break. We would all do it together because Sam, Tobey and I are a team now, but there’s no way it’s going to happen very soon. I just can’t imagine that. We don’t have the story to tell right now.”

Spider-Man 3 star Tobey Maguire recently spoke with iFMagazine about bringing a darker tone to the character of Peter Parker/Spider-Man for the third film. “This is something [director] Sam [Raimi] and I worked a lot on, because we don’t want to lose the audience caring for the character, but we do want to push it,” says Maguire. ”We don’t want to make it too scary, we want it to be dark, but still have some humor and some fun with it. So we’re constantly working on the exact tone of it. I had a lot of fun doing it as an actor. There’s a different side of Peter Parker…I had a good time doing that. It was more of an internal battle. Building his story arc was fun in terms of the villains outside of myself, I think they are all so different and I appreciate them for what they are. Sandman was a villain from the comic books that I always wanted to see in a Spider-Man movie. I was really excited about that. I think we tied him into Peter’s story line very well. Harry Osborn - that was the cliffhanger from the second movie. That one was probably the most emotional.”
As for the possibility of a fourth film, Maguire says, “I’ve had a great time doing them, I’ve enjoyed it and I’m glad I’ve done all three movies. We may make more of them or a fourth one, if there’s a story worth telling and a right team of actors and Sam is on board, then I would consider doing a fourth one.”
